CULTURAL ENRICHMENT FOR AT-RISK YOUTH:
Your support to this ticket underwriter program helps us expose youth to professional theatre productions, some for the first time, and engage them by allowing them, their mentors, and guardians to ask questions of the cast members about the production. Supporters underwrite the cost of the tickets which are distributed, free of charge, to underprivileged and at-risk children. These experiences promote the development of alternative and positive means of expression. Donations cover ticket costs, meals, and transportation for children and their guardians. Live performances are followed by group discussions with mentors and, when possible, with cast members.
Sometimes the program sends youth to other cultural and socially educational events. For instance, in 2006, the Kevin Jones Foundation donated tickets to Buku Productions Theatre Company so children could attend a Detroit Lions football game at Ford Field. The tickets were donated by Buku Productions to the youth group at Gregg Memorial AME Church in Detroit. Of all the youngsters, ranging in age from three to sixteen, only two had ever been to a professional sporting event of any kind. They even got to meet the foundation’s namesake, Kevin Jones, who was then the Lion’s starting running back.
Paying A Child’s Way To The Play has been one of our top public service projects because it has a direct, immediate impact on so many young lives. The premise is simple, expose Detroit area youth to positive, wholesome entertainment and elevate their cultural and social outlook. You can’t know where to go as you grow unless you’ve seen something constructive along the way. Our simple belief is, “Children who come to appreciate art and culture will not grow up to be wayward citizens.”
